The fade guide
Four fades, in the words we use at the chair. All four are cut on coils, waves, curls and straight hair.
- 01
Skin fade
The hair is taken down to the skin at the bottom and blended up into the length on top. It has the sharpest contrast, and it shows growth fastest.
Book a skin fadeIn the chair: 45 to 60 minutes
Back every 2 weeks to keep it sharp
Pairs with a lineup and a beard shape-up
- 02
Taper fade
The length stays on the sides and tapers short only at the neckline and sideburns. It is the softest of the four and the easiest to wear to an office.
Book a taper fadeIn the chair: 40 minutes
Back every 3 to 4 weeks
A good first fade
- 03
Drop fade
The fade line drops behind the ear and curves down toward the neck instead of running straight around. It follows the shape of your head.
Book a drop fadeIn the chair: 45 minutes
Back every 2 to 3 weeks
Works with waves, curls and a longer top
- 04
Burst fade
The fade arcs around the ear in a half circle and leaves length at the back, so the cut has a clear shape from the side and the back.
Book a burst fadeIn the chair: 45 to 60 minutes
Back every 2 to 3 weeks
Good with curls, waves and coils
Before you sit down
Bring a photo
A picture is the quickest way to say what you want.
Show it on your phone or bring it printed. Your barber will look at your hair and growth pattern and say what is possible, then agree the cut with you before the clippers come on.
What helps
Show where the fade should start and stop
Point out a cowlick, a part or a spot you don't want touched
Say how you wear it day to day, and what you do for work

Book your fade
Choose a fade and a barber, or walk in when a chair is open.
